SELECTED REVIEWS:

"The line to get into the South by Southwest debut of Shut Up And Play The Hits snaked down a city block…Just like the MSG show, not everyone who wanted to get in could make it through the door. The live footage is amazing….Some audience members literally couldn't sit still for the duration of the screening and took to the aisles during the live numbers. It was hard to fault them, what with the fantastic, chair-shaking sound installed in the venue. Twice, the audience burst into applause after songs."

Susan Shepard, Rolling Stone

"While it’s a great metaphor for their final show at Madison Square Garden, don’t go into the film expecting a procession of nostalgia…the strength of the film is that it doesn’t ever hover in the band’s history, it always returns to the present… Shut Up And Play The Hits is the last great LCD Soundsystem song, encapsulating the climax of an era..."

URB.com

"The Last Waltz for the electro-DJ-generation. Lovelace and Southern's creation is a complex, yet beautifully constructed exploration of legacy, set to some of the most attractive concert footage in recent memory. LCD and music fans rejoice; this is one of the best concert documentaries in years... one of the most interesting and enjoyable musical documentary experiences in a long, long time"

Ryland Aldrich, Twitch Film

"As "The Last Waltz" was for the Band and aging hippies, "Shut Up and Play the Hits" is for indie dance-rock's LCD Soundsystem and the kids who were in high school on 9/11....scenes of laid-back Murphy shaving and walking his French bulldog gradually lead, with the help of audio-track questions from writer Chuck Klosterman, to the 41-year-old rock star's meditations on his parting gesture as a communal exercise in coping with mortality."Shut Up" is initially satiric but ultimately disarming in its emotional resonance...."

Rob Nelson, Variety

"this could prove to be the hipster Last Waltz"

Kevin Perry, GQ

"Equal parts funeral and party, the wonderful LCD Soundsystem documentary/concert film Shut Up And Play The Hits chronicles for posterity the revered dance band’s final concert in front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden. Like D.A, Pennebaker’s Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, the film documents an artist intent on going out on top... As the similarly transcendent earlier Sundance documentary Sugar Man illustrated indelibly, that is how legends are made. At its ecstatic, delirious best, Shut Up And Play The Hits is a profoundly spiritual and emotional experience..."

Nathan Rabin, A.V Club

"The film brilliantly juxtaposes shots of the morning after (and days before) the final show with the concert itself, moving through the set-list and the day after seamlessly, interweaving shots and creating an engaging editorial narrative. Shut Up and Play the Hits‘ central dialog comes from an interview journalist Chuck Klosterman conducted with Murphy. The questions are fantastic, yielding fantastic answers and a deepened insight into Murphy. Shut Up and Play the Hits  gives us a fly-on-the-wall look at the final hours of a band completely self-conscious of its destiny, yet still on the brink of the unknown...."

Beth Carter, Wired

"A mash-up of cinema and journalism, document and performance; a concert film sandwiched between a mission statement and a staged punctuation to a career: the LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut up and Play the Hits offers more basic narrative satisfaction than many of the fiction films shown here [Sundance] using documentary aesthetics in the name of realism...

Karina Longworth, Village Voice Review

'Shut Up And Play The Hits' Is LCD Soundsystem’s 'The Last Waltz'"

William Goss, Indiewire

"Last night's midnight screening of Shut Up and Play the Hits was the highlight of our day, the second best thing to having attended LCD Soundsystem's final show at Madison Square Garden...visually arresting and monumental and profound....a thrilling experience..."
